Mildred was born in Jackson, Mississippi, but did most of her growing up in Hattiesburg. She was an outstanding student and also quite popular, being elected Miss Hattiesburg High in her senior year. Her leadership qualities carried over to Mississippi College where she was selected to the Roll of Honor and also elected to the home coming court her junior year.
After some graduate work at Mississippi College, she taught junior high English in the Jackson (Miss.) public schools for two years, got married and taught in the Tallahassee, Florida schools for three years, until the birth of her son, Douglas.
After Doug's birth, she devoted herself to taking care of him and her husband, Gipson. They went to Bowling Green, Kentucky for four years, and then on to Mississippi State University, where they lived for 25 years. She and her husband retired in 1998 and moved to Orange Beach, Alabama until their move to the Houston area just three months ago.
She is survived by her husband of 49 years, James Gipson Wells, her son Douglas Gipson Wells and his wife Damarys "DeeDee" (Gonzalez-Rodiles), three grandchildren: Logan Douglas Wells, Landon Ryan Wells, and Peyton Nicole Wells; step-grandchild, Damaris "Meca" America Kibodeaux; and sister, Mary Dean and her husband Kenneth.
